BLOC PARTY
A Weekend in the City
Vice Records

· Brit-pop darlings pull off their second attempt at stardom.

Bloc Party is so good. OK, now let me expand on it a bit. Well, for starters I don’t watch any of those crap teen dramas, so if they have signed over a song to cable, I haven’t heard it and therefore I won’t associate the band with any of that nonsense (like I had to with Interpol and Franz Ferdinand). If you liked Banquet or any of their following singles, mash-ups or remixes, you’ll probably enjoy this as well. It’s basically the dance-driven rock that you’d expect, but there’s something new in A Weekend in the City. It sounds a bit more grown up this time around. The album’s more varied with a bit of Brit-pop, some off-kilter beats that square off against synth undercurrents ("The Prayer") and pleading lyrics that go really well with dance-rock.

At times it’s absolutely sweet ("I Still Remember") and at times kind of dark ("Hunting for Witches"). There are some bleak introductions and harsh endings. There are songs that could make you dance or make you weep. All in all, I liked this album – a lot.
