THE EARLIES
The Enemy Chorus
679/Secretly Canadian

· Destination: Planet Kraut.

A mess of sounds, ideas and scattershot melodies multi-layered and edited on computer, the music of The Earlies doesn’t quite come off as that of a band proper, primarily given its rather singular vision.

The Enemy Chorus flies all over the place, without losing direction in the process. There’s a new flirtation with kraut rock, high-rise vocals propelled by horns, burping synths and psych-out sound bursts. The Enemy Chorus sings somewhere alongside Mercury Rev’s See You on the Other Side, albeit with somewhat more clarity and focus. "Bad is as Bad Does" swirls into a climactic staircase of piano, while "Foundation and Earth" puts its driving horn section first and foremost. The vocals float alongside the orchestral procession as yet another level of texture and form. The album works best as a whole, its twists and turns best experienced in succession – an amazing series of sounds and form.

For a band so young – and with so many chefs stirring the pot – The Enemy Chorus stands as striking testament to the big and united sounds a group of misfit daydreamers locked in a room together can create.
