· Third album by Danish deathmetal quintet debuts new singer – a Frenchman.

Death metal has never been a genre known for its mass appeal and MNEMIC do little to break down any barriers with their album Passenger. The third album for the Danish quintet sees the debut of new singer, Frenchman Guillaume Bideau from Scarve, who replaces former front man Michael Bogbelle.

MNEMIC, which stands for Mainly Neurotic Energy Modifying Instant Creation, create the kind of pulse-pounding metal that is loved by Germans, feared by priests and loathed by downstairs neighbours everywhere. Passenger opens with the sound of a plane taking off and gets louder from there, exploding in primal-screams, thunderous drums and guitars that have been turned up to 11.

The tracks on Passenger are more slight variations on a theme than a collection of distinguishable songs, MNEMIC have found their sound and they are sticking with it. The occasional moments of eerie melody are too few and far between to make any impact on the overwhelming wall of breakneck metal.

While those who love hard, powerful, angry metal will likely enjoy the ride, very few outside metal fanatics will find much here to get excited about.
