LONEY, DEAR
Loney, Noir
Sub Pop

· Making music that easily falls in line with his label mates The Shins, Rogue Wave, Holopaw and Fruit Bats, Loney, Dear is the pseudonym for multi-instrumentalist Emil Svanängen.

On his fourth album Loney, Noir, Emil Svanängen takes the melancholy melodies he pioneered in his bedroom and fleshes them out Sufjan Steven’s style, with all manner of instrumentation – shimmering tambourines, haunting woodwinds, lilting squeeze box and glitchy synth. Svanängen has a true knack for making happy-sounding sad songs and as Loney, Noir swells musically, Svanängen’s falsetto wrings all the emotion he can from the material. It’s not surprising that a man who started making music alone in his bedroom makes music that is perfect for listening to under the same circumstances.
