GHOSTFACE KILLAH
More Fish
Def Jam
· GK squeezes off another round of old-skool flavoured beats and ballads for ballers for the new year.
Having released a piece that topped many lists for album of the year while still in its early days, it was obvious Fishscale would be a tough act to follow. Makin hay while the sun shines and getting the inevitable out of the way, Ghostface Killah (GK) pumped out More Fish in short order at the tail-end of 2006. Neither a completely cynical cash-in on his current success nor a collection of randomly assembled also-rans, its able to stand on its own merits thanks to top-shelf beat-smiths and his razor-sharp lyrical delivery.
Though a couple songs seem tacked-on as afterthoughts (the Mayfieldish single "Good") and he disappears for three tracks that get handed over to protégés, some of the numbers could stand up to (classic Wu-Tanger "Outta Town Shit" and slinkily cinematic "Alex (Stolen Script)") or even surpass (the plaintive "Street Opera" or MF DOOM solidifying his cartoon cred with the best Spider-Man riff ever on "Guns N Razors") many of the tracks on Fishscale.
More Fish may not pack the same punch as its predecessor, but it still has enough kick to keep it from falling into the out-take/filler camp. Sure, it might have been better if it simmered for a few more months, but it still beats most of the shit out on the streets today and fans will find more than enough here to feed their GK jones.
