Virulence proves that, yet again, a collection of veterans (the nice word for "old guys" and/or "longhorns") still know how to rock better than a stadium full of greenhorns. Comprised of members of Good Riddance, Descendents/All, Gwar and Converge, Only Crime has enough familiarity within the circle to justify this union but enough spice from punk rock’s various sub-genres to ensure that anything but re-tread will occur. Virulence is, well, a virulent mixture of aggression, passion, melancholy and flat-out frustration. In fact, as the band settles into comfort with this side-project, it becomes even more dynamic, interesting and refreshing than anything the members have done in the past. Song structures are expansive, the ability to oscillate between tempos and grooves is omnipresent. These guys are having fun rather then maintaining the status quo. That in itself makes for a fucking great listen. All in all, this effort holds far more weight and ferocity than anything they’ve managed to churn out in their day jobs in years. Well, except for maybe Converge. They’ve still got it. But this is much better.
