· Young bands look to keep forward momentum.

Looking to capitalize on a year of critical acclaim, We Are Scientists have recorded a four-song live EP, drawing tracks from their last two releases, including "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt," and "It’s a Hit." How does one followup touring with the Arctic Monkeys? By releasing a special U.K. collection of singles and B-Sides entitled Crap Attack. North American fans without access to special import services will have to console themselves with this stripped-down version that gives full rein to the emotional tension of songs like "Nobody Move, Nobody Gets Hurt" and the plaintive yearning of "The Great Escape." Plus, the band is rumoured to be making a special appearance on MTV’s new reality series, I’m From Rolling Stone.

Also looking to expand on recent success, Beirut follows last fall’s Gulag Orkestar with the Lon Gisland EP. Here the Old World folk rhythms combine with Zach Condon’s golden voice and pop sensibilities on "Scenic World," with an expanded and more prominent accordion part, and "Elephant Gun" to capture a sort of rustic, brokedown, fairground quality – a Coney Island of the mind, as it were. Again, Jeremy Barnes’s horn is instantly recognizable from such Neutral Milk Hotel releases as In the aeroplane over the sea.
