JULIE DOIRON
Woke Myself Up
Endearing Records

· Julie takes a Trip down memory lane. The U.S. version of the album will be released on indie tastemaking label Secretly Canadian.

For the past few years Julie Doiron, bass player and vocalist from Moncton’s defunct lo-fi stalwarts Eric’s Trip, has been building a solo career dependent on shuffling low self-esteem and tiny heartbroken melodies. Her seventh solo album Woke Myself Up amps things up considerably with session work provided by her former Eric’s Trip bandmates. Lending his production skills and trademark sludgy psychedelia, Rick White’s presence is felt throughout, while the remaining members Mark Gaudet and Chris Thompson turn up on a handful of tracks. They don’t dominate the recording, though. There is still a good portion of timid finger-plucked gems to balance out the rockers. The resulting album is a return to form for those fans of Doiron’s who first fell in love with her in Eric’s Trip. Woke Myself Up isn’t any less personal than her other solo outings. Doiron has always revealed more of herself than most songwriters (she has admitted sometimes it’s too much) and this collection of songs taps into her feelings on love, family, breakdown and disappointment. Blending her current wave of emotions with old-school musicianship, Doiron delivers the best album of her solo career.
