· Aptly named debut fails to connect.
For all the heavy posturing of the industrial music scene, there is a really strong pop vein that runs through it. Sitting on top of this fissure for the last decade has been Matt Mahaffey of sELF and Jeff Turzo of God Lives Underwater. Combining loud guitars and distorted vocals with heavy beats, the pair demonstrated their continued, if somewhat formulaic, ability to pen catchy riffs in their respective projects. Unfortunately, neither of them has any skill as a lyricist, and so undermine their efforts with generalized angst-ridden descriptions of life in L.A. or misplaced pop songs about girls set to screaming guitars and fuzzed-out beats.
