| Winter might seem like an odd time to be out for a long walk, but weather be dammed for Walking a Thin Line: The Third Annual Winter Art Stroll, running until Saturday, January 13th.
This event is intended to put a spring back into the step of galleries, artists and art lovers who might be tempted to stay inside on a cool day. The stroll is headquartered in the Triangle Gallery, but includes venues across the city.
If you stroll over to Triangle Gallery, what youll see is Hit or Miss: An Exhibition of Contemporary Drawing. With nearly 30 artists highlighted in this show, Hit or Miss includes works from Calgarys vanguard, such as Ron Moppett and pieces by up-and-comers, including Ryan Sluggett.
After Hit and Miss, amble on over to the Untitled Arts Society to check out the exhibition Delineate, that aims to "deconstruct and redefine notions of what is contemporary drawing."
From there, just a floor above, is the 5th Floor Artists Studio, which is showing an exhibition of drawings and paintings titled Lineation. Using the human figure as inspiration, the exhibition includes works by Robert Pierce, Steven Mack, Wanda Rottenfusser, Martin Herbert, Aaron Sidorenko and Amy Dwyer.
Now leave these warm confines and head to ArtFirm Gallery for a peak at the exhibition Alignment.
Next is Newzones Gallery, where Landscape is on view. Just in time to feed the eyes of the public who are blinded by winters shades of grey and brown, Landscape brings desperately needed colour back into our world, by featuring paintings such as Looking for More by Joshua Jensen-Nagel, or Stable Storage by Kevin Sonmor.
Rounding out the 2007 Winter Art Stroll is a performance and installation by Edward Nyikes titled E3=h(2rr) 2 at Image 54 Gallery.
"On the opening day the gallery will have a number of drawings in various states of completion and in some cases there will be blank sheets of paper on the wall," says Daniel Lindley, director of Image 54. "As the exhibition progresses, work will be produced on the drawings and some will probably leave the wall as people purchase them. In this exhibition, we will be combining performance art aspects with an open artists studio (in a) a gallery setting."The official opening of the Winter Art Stroll is at the Triangle Gallery on January 11 from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
