GOING GREEN
by Adrienne Beattie
Green up your sex life
Take your passion for the planet into the bedroom and get it on green-style. Purchase your sex toys responsibly by bringing your environmental awareness with you to the adult store. Choose long-lasting toys over the disposable gimmicks. Dildos made of glass are durable and can be recycled if you tire of them. Many toys contain endocrine-disrupting phthalates, lead, PVCs (which release dioxin) or cadmium. Choosing high-quality silicone, rubber or glass is better for the environment and your health. For your battery-operated playthings, invest in rechargeable batteries. A number of companies are even making solar powered vibrators that are said to provide up to two hours (is someone really using these things for two hours?) of delight once charged.

Now that you’ve got your new green toys, it’s time to lube them up. Lubricants contain petrochemicals and some contain animal-based glycerin or lactic acid, but there are eco-alternatives available. Hathor makes a condom-friendly lube with organic ingredients like ginseng. Sensua makes flavoured and unflavoured condom-friendly lube with 95 per cent organic grapefruit seed extract. And for those folks that are into nipple gel, Earth’s Herbal Organic Ice Queen Nipple Gel is a good green option. All of these brands are available online, but some local adult stores carry natural products as well.

Of course the most environmentally benign way of preventing pregnancy is abstinence, barring that, there are some birth control methods that have less of an impact than others. Hormonal birth control, such as the pill, is becoming a global problem. Sewage containing synthetic estrogen creates chemical imbalance in waterways. The endocrine disruption it causes affects aquatic life in various ways including the documented feminization of fish and the creation of fish hermaphrodites. The intrauterine device, or IUD, does not contain hormones and can last up to 10 years, however, it does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Latex condoms are not biodegradable, so don’t flush them down the toilet. So long as you know your partner well, biodegradable condoms like vegan condoms or lambskin condoms are available.

Sex is a messy affair, but make sure your sex life isn’t messing up the Earth. Greening up your sex toys, lube supplies and birth control is a simple way to reduce your sexual footprint.
