BAD ASTRONAUT
Twelve Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment
Fat Wreck Chords

· Bad Astronaut is the side-project of Joey Cape from Lagwagon.

Bad Astronaut aren’t nearly as crusty as many of the bands on Fat Wreck Chords, but it’s not a bad thing. With the label branching out into the realm of pop from their safe haven of punk, the artists on the roster have more room to experiment. Twelve Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment has all the synthy sneer of vintage albums by The Anniversary, the kind of wry vocal delivery that Matthew Caws has perfected in Nada Surf, and a few well-timed yelps to keep it edgy. The album takes more chances than one might expect from a Fat Wreck side-project. With a variety of production techniques accenting the album and the eight-minute epic "The ‘F’ Word" balancing the two-minute new wave freak-outs, Twelve Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment continues to reveal itself even after several listens.
