· Bring on the indie rock!

Quirky, weird and not afraid to be a little bit dumb, Born Ruffians have everything it takes to fit comfortably into the tidal wave of indie-rock revival bands across the continent. Where some other bands seem to be forcing weirdness, it comes naturally to this Toronto trio.

Their self-titled debut EP is crammed full of offbeat, frenetic time signatures which will either make you dance or make you dizzy, but you get the sense they want both. As the perfect complement, singer Luke LaLonde’s stream-of-consciousness lyrics about admittedly dull subject matter sound like pure genius when shrieked in his high-pitched howl.

The commercial success of bands like The Shins has spawned about a million soundalike bands, but few have the confidence to pull it off quite like Born Ruffians.
