I'm a former Calgarian and my advice to you is don't complain about the boom. All I can say is welcome to the world of living in a large city. Think house prices are high? It's no different in Toronto and area, only they've been this high since the '80s. Traffic is a different story. Calgary's rush hour is a walk in the park compared to commuting anywhere near Toronto. Think Memorial Drive or the Deerfoot is bad? Take a drive down the 20 lane 401 at 5 p.m. on a muggy 44 C summer afternoon with no air conditioning. I spent a year working in downtown Toronto and ran into congestion at midnight on a regular basis.
After four years of living in Ontario I'm happy to be moving back to Calgary this January. Calgary is a place where people are still friendly, where they stop to let you cross the road, not try to run you over and where driving to work doesn't include constant road rage. Sorta makes the high rent seem like a deal to me.
