· A change of heart leads to a stellar effort.
If I cut up all my R&B records and paste them back together again, will it be considered a tribute to my passion? If I distil their essence, can I pour out their soul? If I transcribe them into binary, will my computer learn to dance? Can its electrons carry my love of music across the digital divide. These are the questions that Al Cowan asked himself while working on his follow-up to My Favourite Letters. According to rumour, just as the album was nearing completion, Cowan began to suspect that the feeling of his tracks wasnt up to par and decided to throw em out and start again. The result, boldly entitled Forward, is an electronic album that smoothly runs the gamut of jazz, latin bop, R&B and so much more. At times sounding like disco night at Paisley Park, while at others midnight at the Knitting Factory, Forward is so good it makes us wonder if maybe those other songs deserve a chance too.
