THE ROOTS
Game Theory
Def Jam
· The Roots leave Geffen for Def Jam Records.
?uestlove (The Roots drummer/band leader) is one of the most important artists in music today. Thankfully, he and The Roots were able to make a leap to a label that is not concerned with The Roots producing hits. They should always be regarded by any label as being the artistic integrity portion of their roster.
Game Theory couldnt be any stronger. The songs are tightly sewn together with a sophisticated musical sensibility integrating The Roots various styles effortlessly. Containing all of the tightness of 2004s Tipping Point, and much of the adventurous spirit of 2002s Phrenology, it could be the strongest Roots album to date. Melodic, funky tracks ("Baby, Long Time") flow sweetly between darker ones ("Its All in the Music, Here I Come").
As per usual, every track features guest performances by less famous artists that inevitably have me Googling for days. Just when I finally found a copy of Cody Chesnutts (the vocalist/guitarist on the track "The Seed from Phrenology") The Headphone Masterpiece, Game Theory has me combing Myspace for exciting new groups like Nouveau Riche and J*Davey.
Not to be missed.
