THE ALBUM LEAF
Into the Blue Again
Sub Pop
· More moody, melancholy, mid-tempo music.
As the brains behind The Album Leaf, Jimmy Lavalles formula is simple an epic wash of nostalgia created with glitchy beats, Rhodes organ and heartbreaking melodies. Sometimes he lays on the pathos with a glockenspiel solo, but even when Lavalle wrings every bit of emotion he can out of a song, it never feels cheap. On Into the Blue Again he offers more of the same, but the material is so refreshingly sweet that its hard to knock this retread. To his credit, Lavalle branches out with more singing on the album, but unfortunately the vocals are never as pretty as the music supporting it. He may be a master of many instruments, but he should stick to playing.
