MADELEINE PEYROUX
half the perfect world
Rounder
· Thanks a latté.
The sweetheart of the Starbucks/Chapters set took a few more steps down the smooth-jazz road that could eventually see her mentioned in the same sentence as Diana Krall and Norah Jones. She dodges that bullet this time but has made some questionable song choices. Leonard Cohen's best work is behind him, but we are treated to versions of two of his latest tunes and some mediocre Larry Klein compositions. It's only her voice that saves her. Madeleine Peyroux has an unparalleled ability to convey genuine emotion in every syllable and phrase no matter how trite. She uses this gift to the utmost effect on the Tom Waits composition "(looking for) the heart of Saturday Night" and Serge Gainsbourg's "la javanaise." Unfortunately, there are not enough of these moments on the CD.
