Get thinking and take action
The Plaza theatre in Kensington (1133 Kensington Road N.W.) has launched a monthly series called Get Informed and they start things off with Iraq for Sale on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation and the series is designed to get people thinking and talking and eventually taking action.

Arusha Action Film Series is also screening Iraq for Sale on Wednesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. at the Uptown Stage and Screen (612 — 8th Avenue S.W.). Tickets are $10 at the door and 100 per cent Calgary Dollars are accepted. Children and youth under 15 are free. Iraq for Sale is the latest film from Robert Greenwald, and focuses on the true stories of victims of companies like Halliburton, Blackwater and many others who operate in Iraq at tremendous profit with virtually no accountability.

The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) gear up for their fall workshops including Editing Film and Video: Final Cut Pro 5 October 14 to 15 with Ken Filewych; Super 8 Transfer Saturday, October 21 with David Jones; Making Your First Film: What you need to know! on Saturday October 21 with Michael Peterson, and Grip (and Electrics) on Saturday, October 28 with Allen Belyea. Fairytales: Calgary’s International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is currently calling for submissions for their 9th annual festival, scheduled for spring 2007. The early submission deadline is March 1, 2007. For more information, visit www.fairytalesfilmfest.com.

This month, the W.R. Castell Central Library (616 MacLeod Trail S.E.) presents a number of screenings in conjunction with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). Local filmmaker Anne Marie Nakagawa’s Between: Living in the Hyphen examines cultural identity by addressing the experiences of Canadians with one parent from a European background and one from a visible minority. This film will screen on Monday, October 16 at 7 p.m. in the John Dutton Theatre. This theatre will also host the NFB Jazz Film Festival throughout the month of October. Covering everyone from Oliver Jones to Linton Garner, and set everywhere from Louisiana to Havana, these films are sure to satisfy the jazzhead in all of us. Visit calgarypubliclibrary.com for more details.

The NFB also has a call out to emerging filmmakers of colour for proposals for the 2006 Reel Diversity Competition. If you fit the bill and have an idea for a creative and compelling documentary, send your proposal no later than October 27 to www.nfb.ca/reeldiversity. Up to eight finalists will have the chance to develop their proposals and three winners will be selected to make their own documentaries and have them broadcast on CBC Newsworld. Go forth and propose!
