· Ride that dragon one more time space tiger.

I have written every single Mars Volta studio album review for Fast Forward magazine. This is number three and counting. People have either embraced their Mexican prog-rock or recoiled in disgust at the idea of a 22-minute song with bird effects. Personally, I love these guys and the new album is more of the same – skinny jeans, big hair and Led Zeppelin meets a mariachi band vibe.

If you loved the first record (De-loused in the Comatorium) and persevered through the second (the concept album Frances the Mute), then you’re going to freakin’ love this one. It has the energy of Comatorium with the creativity and epic song construction of Frances. John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) returns once again to battle it out with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (The Mars Volta’s brainchild and main composer) with duelling guitar solos, trading off throughout the album with mind-melting riffs.

The Mars Volta is a band that has given itself up to the mysteries of the universe – embracing mind control, time-travel and a psychedelic spirit that just won’t quit (no matter how many people hope they do).
