THE BLACK MARIA
A Shared History of Tragedy
Victory Records
· Over-produced vocals and too much melodrama leaves a yucky aftertaste.
This disc did not grow on me despite multiple listens. When the intro to "Van Gogh" started a recital of a 90s Bon Jovi power ballad, I gave up. I was disappointed both in myself for storing those random lyrics in some cob-webbed corner of my brain and in The Black Maria for recreating a superficial mood of heartache.
Small nuggets of redemption appear on parts of "A Call to Arms" and "Living Expenses," but they too eventually succumb to an over-polished and just plain cheesy sound.
