MICHAEL BERNARD FITZGERALD
Black and White Phonetics
Independent

· Local singer-songwriter’s debut full-length steadily crawls under your skin with repeated listens.

The lead-off percussion-laden, hiccupping track doesn’t do Michael Fitzgerald justice as his true strengths emerge as the album unfolds and slows down. As anxious tempos subside and vocals mellow, an enjoyable brand of folk-funk appears on songs "Prime tv" and "Love you till I die."

With a gentle edge to his occasionally gruff vocals, Fitzgerald casually traverses social commentary and the trials of love without ever dipping into subject matter too dark for the light musical mood that pervades Black and White Phonetics. The standout track, "And I" simply captures a moment of contemplation and gratitude while leading the listener to wonder what potential lies in the years ahead for this young musician. By the end of the disc, the future looks quite bright and lovely.
