VIVA VOCE
Get Yr Blood Sucked Out
Barsuk

· Third time’s the charm for this duo from Alabama.

Maybe married life agrees with Viva Voce or maybe they just got more comfortable in the studio, but even though the arrangements on Get Yr Blood Sucked Out are more stripped down than in the past, the result is much more layered. Album opener "Believer" gives the Black Mountain army a run for their money, while "When Planets Collide" takes the best parts of Blood Meridian and adds some killer blues solos. There are hints of Madder Rose, Mazzy Star and even Jimi Hendrix, but it’s the Elephant Six-like "From the Devil Himself" that stands as the album’s standout track. At times, Viva Voce may border on classic CCR, but the harmonies and lyrics make that comparison bearable.
