COUNSELLING SERVICES AND CRISIS LINES

Students deal with all sorts of stressors including home sickness, relationship issues, peer pressure, career decisions, grief, trauma and financial pressures. Symptoms of stress can result in addictive behaviour, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, weight loss or gain, suicidal thoughts and/or fatigue, but help is available. Most services featured below are either free or can be accessed on a sliding scale.

FOOD BANKS

The issue of hunger and poverty strikes students across the country. Many campuses have set up their own food banks in order to deal with both chronic and emergency food problems.

SAFETY AND SELF DEFENCE

Safety on campus is a growing concern for students. Many institutions have 24-hour security and safewalk programs. Self-defence courses are also a good way to increase confidence and security during your time as a student. Courses can be found at many martial arts studios, city recreational programs, women’s centres and specialized clinics.

Escorted walks 24/7 by either student volunteer teams or Campus Security personnel. Stop by Campus Security at the West Gate or use one of the red phones or pay phones around campus to request escorts.

Safe and Sound

Self defence courses for men, women, children, teenagers and those with disabilities. Lead instructors are police officers. This program is partnered with Block Watch and consults with various organizations, including several post-secondary institutions in Calgary.

SAIT Safewalk Program

Escorted walks Monday to Friday between 6 and 11 p.m. to or from any location within 10 blocks of the SAIT Campus.

University of Calgary Safewalk Program

Offers escorted walks 24/7 to any location on campus including parking lots, bus zones and campus housing. Call for free on campus from Smartphone pay phones or emergency phones.

SEXUAL HEALTH CLINICS

For information on sexuality, birth control, emergency contraception, pelvic examinations, pap tests, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy tests, pregnancy options counselling and IUD insertion, the clinics below offer free and confidential support. Many campuses also have health clinics for their students.

24-HOUR COPY CENTRES

Last-minute report preparations might go on into the wee hours of the night. Photocopying and printing services can be tough to find when your printer is out of order or you can’t get to a photocopier on campus.
