| The Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) presents the Manhattan Short Film Festival, Thursday, September 14 at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre (1133 Kensington Road N.W.). Four hundred and eighty-nine filmmakers from 39 countries entered this years festival. Just 12 finalists were selected. Their films will screen in 72 cities in 14 countries including Calgary! Audiences will be asked to vote for what they think is the "best film" and the winner will be announced after the last screening in Union Square Park, New York City on Sunday, September 24. The Ming Short Film Festival took place last weekend to great success and a packed house. The grand-prize winner was Michael Peterson, who had two films in the final. His champion short The Song follows the aphrodisiac power of a piece of music, composed by Calgarys own The Cape May. This years second place winner was Le Carousel Violent by David Dean, who also took second place in last years festival. Third place went to Genn Meldrum and Erin Sander for Tiny Frequencies. Future filmmakers of the city unite! The CSIF (Building J2, 2711 Battleford Avenue S.W.) presents the first of their fall workshops "Lights Camera Action" September 30 to October 1 with instructor Philip Letourneau. This two-day workshop will examine the fundamentals of the motion picture camera including exposure, lens and light filtration, as well as the basics of lighting. Topics will include how to operate, thread, and use 16mm and Super 8 cameras, exposure and the use of camera filters and lighting gels. This is designed to help people understand film and to give them the tools they need in order to shoot their first project.
Get the fake blood out the Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) is challenging you to make a short horror film or video. The trick is that the festival will randomly assign a theme, a line of dialogue and a list of props that must be in your movie. Registration deadline is January 21, 2007.
