Leonard Cohen I’m Your Man
Verve Forecast

· What’s better than Leonard Cohen? Nick Cave singing Leonard Cohen. To me. Alone. The film Leonard Cohen – I’m Your Man opens on Friday, September 1 at the Uptown Screen.

There is something so powerful and moving about the poetry and songs of Leonard Cohen that it’s not surprising that he has so many fans. His intelligent lyrics and beautiful, haunting voice command attention and respect – and that’s just what he’s getting with the soundtrack to the new film Leonard Cohen I’m Your Man – a tribute to the man and his music by some of today’s most important singer-songwriters.

As a fan, not only of Cohen, but of most of the performers involved, I am at a loss for words to describe how beautiful this CD is. From the clever arrangements to the choice of performers and songs, this collection is flawless.

Rufus Wainwright leads the pack of songwriting heavyweights performing a stellar version of "Everybody Knows" and Nick Cave’s version of "I’m Your Man" (sigh) leaves you (read: me) feeling weak in the knees. However, as great as these performances are, I have to admit that they are slightly overshadowed by those of Teddy Thompson’s "Tonight Will Be Fine" and Antony of Antony and the Johnsons’ "If it Be Your Will," whose song will leave you with goosebumps and a finger on the "repeat play" button.

If a film can be pre-judged by its soundtrack, then Leonard Cohen I’m Your Man is going to be quite the experience.
