THE PINK SPIDERS
Teenage Graffiti
Geffen

· One million downloads can’t be wrong.

When we think of Nashville, Tennessee, new wave power trios clad in pink and black bursting with energy don’t usually come to mind. But The Pink Spiders have been working locals over since 2004 and steadily creating a buzz for themselves. Relocating to Los Angeles to work with legendary Cars front man Ric Ocasek, Teenage Graffiti is a celebration of youth, homesickness and falling in love with girls.

The big guitar sound and strategically placed pop overdubs of the single "Little Razorblade" may owe more to Ocasek’s input, but over the course of 12 tracks lead-singer Matt Friction shows he can hold his own in any stadium. The frantic pace of "Soft Smoke," describing a night out in Los Angeles, leads into the wonderful pop refrains of "Saturday Nite Riot." Unlike a lot of pop-punk bands singing of girls they love, The Pink Spiders cover the same ground with a lot more irony, rhyming "Oh Emily/ I love you for your apathy" or elsewhere singing "I like her/ but I just don’t care enough." Perhaps "Hollywood Fix" captures the mood of Teenage Graffiti the best with its harmonic refrain:

Gotta love it, it’s so dangerous

Gotta love it, it’s so scandalous

Gotta love it, it’s so infectious

Gotta love it, it’s so dangerous

Gotta love it, it’s so serious

Gotta love it, you sense this sarcasm?

Shamelessly catchy.
