THE MAG SEVEN
The Future Is Ours, If You Can Count
End Sounds
· A rock band with no front man? The Mag Seven work it out.
On their sophomore release, The Future is Ours if You Can Count, instrumental band The Mag Seven kick it punk style with high-speed drumming and some remarkable guitar work. Touting themselves as an instrumental surf-rock punk outfit, The Mag Seven show listeners that they can rock it, sans vocals. Accompanying the Seven on this second release is a plethora of artists, including members of Black Flag, Descendents, All, GWAR, Only Crime, Hagfish and Armstrong.
Featuring an assortment of slightly disconcerting song titles, including the omnipresent sounding "Suck Bitch" and the supreme surf-rock song "Poonzilla," The Future is Ours if You Can Count demonstrates that good rock music gets its point across, even if its purely instrumental. Other standouts on the album are "I Drive Like Steve McQueen," which could make for some good car music, and the frantic and dizzy "Del Scorcho."
All songs are kept short and each one is unique and musically sharp. Overall, The Future is Ours if You Can Count is a solid effort and an enjoyable listen if surf-punk tickles your fancy.
