Defending Israel against one-sided journalism
Re: "Occupational hazards," by Tamara Goertz, Viewpoint, August 03-09.

I believe in Israel’s right to exist, and her right to defend herself.

It is apparent from the very first paragraph of Tamara Goertz’ article that her "Viewpoint" is extremely biased. She speaks of "the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip." somehow forgetting that Israel left the area in yet another attempt at peace. Unfortunately, the first recorded Palestinian response was to bring in more arms and possible al-Qaeda and other terrorists from Egypt. Not surprisingly, it wasn’t long before the Gaza again became a staging ground for attacks on Israeli civilians. To paraphrase Goertz, "Forgotten, it seems…" was the Palestinian abduction of Cpl. Gilad Shalit during their "Operation Scattering Illusion" which triggered Israel’s recent return to Gaza. The only difference was that this time Hamas, like Hezbollah, was surprised that Israel didn’t continue to sit back and take more punishment.

Goertz must blend in nicely with the demonstrators around Calgary, for whom peace means the destruction of Israel.

She then immediately refers to the "alleged kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers." I’m sure that Hezbollah and its supporters, which trumpeted the capture (and the murder of eight others) as a great victory, would vehemently dispute the "alleged" nature of their crime.

Goertz then moves on to describe an abduction of civilians at the Ramattan News Agency’s Beit Hanoun office. She wasn’t kidding when she stated that "This barely made headlines." The agency itself didn’t report an abduction on its website, but rather: "The Palestinian Journalist Bloc released a statement recently condemning the attack on the RNA saying they were detained to prevent coverage."

It almost goes without saying that the The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) site does not list the report including the destruction of homes, despite its racist mandate (UNRWA and The Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator (UNSCO), which employed Marisa Kemper, are both dedicated solely to Palestinians). Which UN organization provides for Israeli victims?

I wish that I could say that this habit of playing fast and loose with the truth was confined to Goertz, but the Arab-Muslim propaganda engine and other apologists for terror have virtually unlimited resources. With this comes incredible political power, despite the favourite fallback that well over one billion Muslims are victimized by a Jewish population less than one-hundredth that size. Perhaps Israel’s tremendous area (20,770 square kilometres – four times that of Calgary’s metro area), versus the 30,800,000 square kilometres of the 52 Muslim-dominant countries of the world, is what scares them.

Thank goodness Canada finally has a leader of integrity and impartiality, who backs democracy and doesn’t sacrifice principles for votes.

Scott Gelfand, Calgary
