THA DOGG POUND
Cali Iz Active
Doggy Style/Koch
· Reunion album escapes the entrapments of nostalgia.
Confidence can be a tricky pony to master. If one goes too far, intended coolness can come off as undue boasting. Similarly, if one rests too much on ones laurels, the inescapable stench of disinterest and laziness creeps in exponentially when status and fiduciary gain come into play. What were trying to say here is that when youre rich and famous; young and overzealous you gotta be careful. Thankfully in the case of Kurupt, Daz and Snoop Dogg otherwise known as Tha Dogg Pound this reunion successfully escapes all of the typical entrapments and nostalgia that have claimed many of similar iconic levels. Oozing with slick groove-infused tracks with a uniquely laid-back edge, Cali Iz Active is a musically infectious blend of style and grace. The trio recalls just enough of their inherent rough grit to remain interestingly dangerous. Unfortunately, the same doesnt always hold on a lyrical level. The misogynist angle is tired and desperately thick here, appealing to the lowest common denominator gangsta lust.
