BLOOD MERIDIAN
Kick Up the Dust
Outside

· More of a great thing from beard-rock mountain army.

Easily the most talented arm of Vancouver’s beard-rock Black Mountain Army, Blood Meridian are masters of finding the delicate balance between rambling roots and their indie rock tendencies. It was hard to imagine that they could top the consistent strength of this year’s Soldiers of Christ EP, the title track easily ranking as one of 2006’s best songs. However, Kick Up the Dust is one of those rare occasions where a band hasn’t blown all its good material early. Whether it’s the haunting cowboy lament "In the Forest, Under the Moon," the easy rock of "Let it Come Down" or the piano-laced tremolo shimmer of "Your Boyfriends’ Blues," Blood Meridian have what it takes to please folkies and hipsters alike. And despite the inclusion of "Soldiers of Christ," it’s "Kick Up the Dust" that plays as album standout. This jangly lo-fi waltz lopes along before blowing open into an epic pedal-steel singalong. That track, and the album for that matter, easily live up to the title.
