THE BRONX
The Bronx
Island

·The band catches fire with the release of second full-length disc.

When the Bronx burst out of the gate with the hardcore thrash of "Small Stone," not even the faux-eastern mysticism of the album art gives them away as an L.A.-based band. The intensity of the followup tracks, to be released as the first singles, "Shitty Future" and "History’s Stranglers," capture the elusive sense of East Coast nihilism indicative of their namesake neighbourhood, while a strong lyricism shows that the Queens of the Stone Age aren’t the only ones riding a claim to nu-metal majesty. It’s not until things slow down that the gothic qualities of The Eagles’ "Hotel California" creep up on tracks like "Oceans of Glass" or "White Guilt." When things resume with "Dirty Leaves" and "Transsexual Blackout (The Movement)," however, it becomes clear that The Bronx are channelling not so much New York, as they are Black Flag (who they are set to depict in an upcoming film). With songs that boil and seethe, The Bronx gives credence to rumours of live shows that threaten to spill over into violence and mayhem.
