SILVERSTEIN
18 Candles: The Early Years
Victory Records
· A retrospective from the youthful band consisting of early release tracks, acoustic renditions, live versions and a "crude mechanical remix."
Following last years Discovering the Waterfront would be no easy task, but perhaps a collection of Silversteins independent album offerings and random other recordings isnt the wisest choice.
Yes, fans will enjoy listening to vocalist Shane Tolds stripped-down offering of "My Heroine" and "Call it Karma" but, overall, the album offers nothing too spectacular. The live tracks fail to capture the sweaty intensity and the gripping, menacing quality that pervaded Discovering. While its mildly interesting to chart the musical evolution of the group from track to track since 2000, it is not a cohesive transition and Silverstein so far have excelled with work that is conceptually and musically tightly connected.
And the final song, a "crude mechanical remix" of "Smile in Your Sleep," just plain hurts.
