Israel cannot afford to soften hardline stance
Re: "Israel and Lebanon: good from evil?" by Gwynne Dyer, International, July 27-August 02.

While Dyer makes some good points, what is missed is a key piece of the puzzle for peace in the Middle East. It’s easy for us to sit back and criticize Israel for its actions and say, "Why won’t they give peace a chance?"

However, you can’t have peace when the goal of one side is the genocidal extermination of the other. Israel is fighting for its most basic right – its right to survive and to exist. Hamas, Hezbolla and others have often and openly stated that their goal is the complete and total destruction of Israel and its people. How can you compromise or talk peace with people whose only goal is to kill you? Plain and simple, you can’t.

Until Hamas, Hezbolla, Syria, Iran and Israel’s other neighbours accept Israel’s basic right to exist Israel cannot afford to back down from its hard line stance. This is the key, once everyone stops threatening to wipe Israel off the map, only then can Israel afford to compromise for lasting peace.
