I thought Canary Mine’s debut album was bad (truth be told, I can’t believe I actually listened to it), but the depth of which Live Tear From The Palindrome sucks is amazing. Take the cheeseball approach of Moxy Früvous, add the shitty white-boy hip hop of the Barenaked Ladies, strip away their sophomoric sense of humour and songwriting ability and it would still be better than Canary Mine. The band’s lyrics are the worst kind of winking, self-aggrandizing drama geek tripe, but it’s nowhere as foul as the between song banter on this live effort (why is their second record live anyway?). Canary Mine would have you think that their genre hopping showcases the band’s versatility, but, really, their chosen barbershop-doo-wop-hip-hop-folk-pop style just proves they can’t play in any genre. Recommended if you like really bad high school drama and shitty fringe shows.
