SILVERSUN PICKUPS
Carnavas
Dangerbird Records
· When these L.A. rockers formed, they sent a poorly-recorded demo to the CMJ festival in New York as a joke and actually got in.
Making good on the promises from last years Pikul EP, Silversun Pickups deliver a rock-solid full-length debut. Taking the guitar-based indie rock framework and smearing it with swirling keyboards, the result is surprisingly lush for an album so streamlined. Crack drum work pushes the songs as they build up and blow open with the fierce pedal-hopping power of their shoegazing forefathers. Singer Brian Aubert rarely trades sad for anything other than angry on Carnavas, and the processed vocals feel a bit try hard at first, but ultimately it all suits the songs. You could say the Pickups sound like Modest Mouse if Isaac Brock and company picked up the pace or Smashing Pumpkins if Billy Corgan could reign in his ego. Still, despite a laundry list of influences, Silversun Pickups dont sound like anyone but themselves.
