| Get out of the sun and head for Newzones Gallery of Contemporary Art, where Sunscreen (the exhibition) is now on.
An annual event, Sunscreen is a rotating exhibition of multi-media works from the gallerys stable of artists.
Two artists being featured are Kevin Sonmor and Don Maynard. Inspired by the Flemish masters, Sonmor uses dreamy landscapes as backgrounds for his still life studies. Born in Lacombe, Alberta, Sonmor is a graduate of Concordia University in Montreal where he received his masters degree in Fine Arts. Maynard is known for works that seem to spring from a primordial place. Layers of seductive wax and burnished metal often meet in pieces that combine ancient practices with modern.
Also on at Newzones is David Robinson: Maquettes. Newzones writes about Robinson, "His sculptures echo classical prototypes both with their primary medium, bronze, and their imagery, the male figure. However, all of this is created with challenging, modern connotations. David Robinson's sculptures range from intimate to overwhelming in size, demonstrating a great command of media and skill as a figurative artist." Both exhibitions run until August 26.
At Image 54 Gallery is an exhibition and fundraiser for the Alberta Printmakers Society, which lost its studio space after its building was leveled to make way for a new condominium development. The show opens on August 1 and runs until August 8.
At Quab Gallery (Art Central) is the exhibition War, which runs until August 26. War features the works of Jerome Prieur, Maya Kulenovic and Scott Waters. Opening night is August 3, from 5 to 8 p.m.
A Calgary artist who for many years has also been creating works of art that speak to human conflict and global war zones is William MacDonnell. From the destruction of Vietnam, to the massacre site of Babi Yar (outside of Kiev), MacDonnell has brought his unique point of view to events that have shaped world history.
On August 3 at 7 p.m. this "war artist" speaks at the Art Gallery of Calgary, where he will discuss the process of creating his current series of paintings being featured at AGC titled The Romantic Disease.
At Herringer Kiss Gallery is another summer group show. This exhibition features new gallery artists Elizabeth Barnes, David Burdeny and Scott Pattinson.
Stride Gallery hosts Super String, featuring participants of the Revolutionary Knitting Circle. Can knitting change the world? Find out as Cindy Baker, Kris Lindskoog, Mary Anne McTrowe and Allyson Mitchell present works that uncover the mysteries of yarn and beyond.
And if you find yourself being mesmerized by stitch and purl, attend a panel discussion at Stride Gallery entitled Craftivism, which is scheduled to take place on August 5 at 12 p.m.
Finally, on a sad note publisher, arts writer, editor and artist Paula Gustafson passed away on July 11th from lung cancer. Gustafson was known across Canada as a passionate advocate for visual arts and as the publisher/editor of Artichoke magazine. She will be missed.
