Organic Music for a Digital Planet
Nine Planets Hip-Hop

· Canada’s urban music talent aims for global domination.

Canada’s electronic underground gets a well-deserved profile on this summer compilation. With acts like Original Recipe and Sinewave, Fear of a Digital Planet rides the east coast old school vibe its title evokes, built around a steady stream of samples and beats. CJ_Harder and Pete Samples meanwhile add a sombre downtempo flair with their respective "Mothra" and "Four Letter Words" – in fact, "Four Letter Words" sounds like an ideal companion to DJ Shadow’s "Midnight in a Perfect World."

The eclectic electronic sounds of Lampshade and Errand Boy round things out with the help of the drum-and-bass stylings of A Great White Bird’s "Salut la Neige" and Andrew Duke. While lacking a definite heart-stopping breakout hit, Fear of a Digital Planet nevertheless shows that Canadian DJs can hold their own on the international scene.

Speaking of breaking out, Ottawa’s DL Incognito seems poised to explode right now. With all of the attention focused on Canadian emcees with the likes of Cadence Weapon, DL Incognito has assembled 16 tracks about living a low-key life, coupled with smooth production values hearkening back to a lush jazzy, orchestral early 1990s sound. With a 2005 Juno nomination in his pocket, Organic Music for a Digital Planet, his third album, is getting picked up in the U.S. and U.K. and he’s already made June appearances on MTV. DJ Incognito is one of Canada’s best kept hip hop secrets – pass it on.
