THE BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ GUIDE TO GETTING DOWN
Directed by Paul Sapiano
King’s Cut, 2006

What’s a fauxmosexual?

The Boys’ and Girls’ Guide to Getting Down, is a series of chapters that both entertains and instructs the viewer on various aspects of a successful party life. The movie is set in the vain and happen’n city of Los Angeles, and focuses specifically on the bustling Caheunga Club scene (Caheunga being the main boulevard for trendy clubs such as Vine Bar, Beauty Bar and Burgundy Room. The film, which debuted at the L.A. film festival this year, has some real street-cred because the movie showcases many real clubbers, bouncers, bartenders and bars.

The "guide" part of The Boys’ and Girls’ Guide to Getting Down, which is strewn between short skits, is immensely enjoyable, coming complete with diagrams, maps, phony scientific experiments and a very serious-sounding narrator. The movie begins during the day leading up to a big night out and guide walks you through how to get into demeaning pick-and-choose clubs, and what to do once you get in – such as how to successfully tip a bartender or pick someone up. The Guide stages various clubland scenarios and how they could go wrong if not properly executed.

The chapter on "Fauxmosexuals," which is a term for straight men who pretend to be gay and hang out in gay bars in order to get girls to sleep with them – is undeniably comical. The Boys’ and Girls’ Guide does come with some sound advice on club life, like escaping the horrendous aftershock of a one- night stand who won’t leave your house, how to drive drunk without getting pulled over and how to keep that talkative coked-out girl quiet at the after party. Even Mr. Belding from Saved by The Bell has a hilarious cameo – he freaks out at a bunch of kids partying at his now-destroyed house. Steve Smith of Dirty Vegas scored the film, and the soundtrack, like the movie, is light and fun.

If you’re a clubber, or a wannabe clubber, this movie is actually a pretty spot-on guide and although it features L.A., it can be applied to virtually any city where young hipsters get down – yes, even Calgary. The film is original, entertaining and educational and will have you getting down in no time.
