Ecstatic Peace!

· Brooklyn trio’s loud and dirty debut.

In an age where most bands seem afraid to really cut loose for fear of looking silly, it’s refreshing to hear a new band that believes rock ’n’ roll should be raw and raucous. Awesome Color believes that guitar solos should be exciting, the rhythm section should be insistent and that there’s no reason not to put distortion on the vocals as well as the guitars.

This scuzz-rock power trio may be from Brooklyn, but their debut sounds like it could be from Detroit circa 1969-1970. Worshipping the twin idols of the MC5’s "Kick out the Jams" and the Stooges "Fun House," the band blasts through short, punchy songs like "Free man" and "It’s your time" and slower, groove-oriented tracks like "Animal," which have a hypnotic, psychedelic drone. They even throw in some Coltrane-ish skronking sax on the manic "Hat Energy" for good measure. They’re derivative to be sure, but when an album is this fun to listen to, it just doesn’t matter.
