CHEB I SABBAH
La Ghriba La Kahena Remixed
Six Degrees
· This is the soundtrack to the big party in Zion.
Cheb i Sabbah wears two hats one as a groundbreaking producer and ethnomusicologist, creating a fusion of east and west appreciated by the cognoscenti of trans-global music, and the second as DJ extraordinaire creating a unique and vibrant club ambience. On La Ghriba he wears both hats the source material from his 2005 album La Kahena is remixed by 11 different artists and compiled by Chebiji into a masterful disc that could be the soundtrack to the primal party in Zion from Matrix: Reloaded.
In the same fashion that Maha Maya was a remix to the very Indian influenced Shri Durga, the North African-styled La Kahena has been given the special treatment by names such as Temple of Sound, Bill Laswell, DJ Sandeep Kumar, MoMo and others. The final product resembles his live set with gradual changes in tempo, energy and style to create a full-on dance experience. He organically transforms drum-and-bass and zen dub into primal trance hysteria, creating the perfect augur for soul-bearing dancing and catharsis. Next time you need to emote, gather your wildest bohemian-hippy-freak friends, dress funky and dance like the world is ending. Cheb I Sabbah will be your guide and saviour. As he says, "music is the only thing I know. It has the power to liberate one from whatever one wants to be liberated." Amen.
