STRAPPING YOUNG LAD
The New Black
Century Media
· Far beyond metal.
They may not be young lads anymore, but self-proclaimed metal extremists Strapping Young Lad still know how to blow the roof off the joint. Returning to the spotlight with their latest release, The New Black.
These stalwart Canadian headbangers have worked long and hard to earn their golden reputations. For their latest effort, singer, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend joined forces with the mad mixologist Mike Fraser renowned for his engineering efforts with Aerosmith and Metallica. Together they have successfully tweaked and polished the new album to modern metal perfection. One listen reveals that upping the ante and redefining the bands sound has paid off big time, as The New Black winds and wends its way through 11 unsettlingly subversive tracks, each more maniacal and delightfully twisted than the last.
Never losing momentum for an instant, Townsend, along with his fellow Lads (bassist Byron Stroud, Gene Hoglan and Jed Simon), blasts through ringers like "Decimator," "U Suck" and "Antiproduct" with an entertaining blend of humour and irrepressible vigour.
Balancing their signature musical technicality with intelligent lyrics and visceral melodies that keep you coming back for more, Strapping Young Lad proves once and for all why they are worthy of the adulation of their fans, as well as the esteem of their peers. Taking their intensity to the next level, the quartet has joined the lineup of this years Ozzfest Tour, a benchmark of bangerdom not to be taken lightly.
