Michael Ignatieff opposes torture
Re: "A good Liberal ain't what it used to be" by David Bright, Viewpoint, June 29 to July 5

I read David Bright's article and was disappointed to see his assertion that federal Liberal leadership hopeful Michael Ignatieff concedes torture may be required to obtain information from suspects.

I have read Mr. Ignatieff's book, The Lesser Evil, and have followed his speeches on the subject of torture. He is without ambiguity on the subject – he does not support torture in any form. A line in the sand has to be drawn on the issue of how far to go to obtain information from terrorist suspects – this is needed to prevent unlimited use of interrogation techniques.

Few have shown the courage Mr. Ignatieff has in facing this challenging issue by defining acceptable limits. While it could be debated as to what interrogation techniques are acceptable, there is no debate as to Mr. Ignatieff's position on torture. He absolutely opposes it.
