GOTAN PROJECT
Lunatico
XL / Beggars

· More tango, less dub on The Gotan Project’s belated followup.

The Gotan Project was founded on a simple idea – that tango and dub were distant cousins (sharing a common heritage in the accordion music of the Mediterranean and the African periphery), that it was time for them to get better acquainted and that the dance floor was the place to meet.

Things go well, others join the party (Federico Aubele, Bajofondo Tango Club...), concert halls sell out, remixes are made, five years pass. Those holding their breath for a new release having long since succumbed to hypoxia, The Gotan Project are in the perhaps fortunate position of not needing to worry too much about disappointing the fans, who have probably moved from the dance floor to iPod-fed home-listening in the meantime. Which is convenient because, despite the title, a stomping opening track and a guest appearance by (may they beg forgiveness from "Our Ever-Suffering Lady of Sanctified Rhythms") a rapper, Lunatico is a mellower effort than its predecessor, with relatively jazzy ballads and instrumentals that flow rather than being driven. They feel fittingly dim by the time the closing track and inspired reworking of Ry Cooder's Paris Texas theme concludes.

4/5
