· Greg Dulli does it again with a dozen pulsing, swirling and cascading confections topped with the sweet icing of his trademark sexy vocals.
Why fix it if it’s not broken? Dulli and cohorts have created such a solid style and distinct ambience for the Twilight Singers with previous albums, their fourth full-length simply grabs the torch where they left off and sprints into the distance. This time, more straight-up rock and hip-gyrating rhythms wrap around lyrics meditating on failed relationships, addictions and sobriety, desire gone amok and poetic propositions.
There are moments that harken back to Afghan Whigs days gone by (think Congregation and upbeat Black Love), but the nostalgia is pleasant and distant enough not to overshadow or leave the material feeling recycled. The introspective tone on Powder Burns is amplified by drummer Bobby MacIntyre’s steady intensity – which is gloriously showcased, and Dulli’s dangerously seductive charm overflows, so that when he proclaims, "I’ve got love for sale, come and get some before it gets stale," you grab your keys and run to the door.
