ROCK KILLS KID
Are You Nervous?
Reprise
· After spending years in isolation, singer Jeff Tucker finds his voice.
Spending years in isolation sounds like a nightmare to most people, but for Rock Kills Kid singer Jeff Tucker, it was a reality. Tucker spent years living alone in a recording studio, writing songs for his bands eventual debut, Are You Nervous?, which was years in the making. The albums content heavily reflects that, as the majority of lyrics revolve around Tuckers perpetual aloneness.
Musically, the album is firmly entrenched in the 80s, but its hard to tell what part of the decade the band is most in love with. They alternately sound like U2 and The Cars, and a good contemporary comparison would be The Killers, who sound nothing like a contemporary band.
Though Nervous is largely Tuckers brainchild, the stars of the album are Sean Stopnik and Reed Calhoun, who communicate respectively via guitar and keyboards. The two instruments complement each other so well while constructing Rock Kills Kids upbeat sound that Tuckers relatively dark lyrics sometimes go unnoticed. "Back to Life" is such a pleasant ballad you hardly notice that Tucker is emerging from his social coma and embracing a life that will soon lead him to the stage. Surely, an adjustment after years in the studio.
