| The new exhibition at the University of Calgarys Nickle Gallery features works from ASA members both past and present. Describing the new exhibition, Alberta Society of Artists at 75, running until July 20, Robin Jaska says, "special tribute will be given to those founding artists whose dedication and vision have shaped a legacy for so many."
At the Herringer Kiss Gallery, until July 15, are new works from Calgary painter Tivadar Boté with the exhibition Close Quarters. Born in Hungary, Boté is a graduate of Alberta College of Art & Design, in addition to training in Japan where he studied traditional Japanese woodblock at Yoshida Hanga Academy in Tokyo. Close Quarters carries forward Botés continuing exploration of abstracting forms.
At Triangle Gallery is Explosion of Forms & Textures: Quebec Art of the 1960s. Artists featured include: Alfred Pellan, Fernand Toupin and Jordi Bonet. "The exhibition highlights major trends from Surrealists through Automatists and the Plasticiens, to the world-reflecting social criticism at the end of that important period," writes Triangles director Jacek Malec.
Several other Calgary galleries have Quebec-related exhibitions that are being offered in conjunction with Explosions of Forms & Textures.
At Paul Kuhn Gallery, until July 29, is an exhibition of drawings and prints from another well known Quebec artist, Guido Molinari. Newzones Gallery is displaying works by Jean Paul Riopelle until the end of August, and at Quab gallery (located at Art Central) is Exposed
the Other Side of Stampede, until July 30. Featured artists include Jerome Prieur, Yvon Goulet and Susanne Apgar.
The Art Gallery of Calgarys newly renovated Media Gallery is displaying the most recent works by Leila Sujir, titled, My Two Grandmothers: RMX. At the works launch, Sujir, along with choreographer and filmmaker Nicole Mion and performers Kimberley Cooper and Eric Rose, will premiere Muscled Memories (described as a "fusion of Mions interactive dance and theatre piece with Sujirs artists talk, based on My Two Grandmothers: RMX) on July 6 at 7 p.m.
Until July 29 at Skew Gallery is Bill Rodgers In the Wool: Queen Anne's Colours. The exhibition features paintings that use the famed Hudsons Bay trading blanket as a "formal and conceptual starting point" in which to explore Canadas 18th Century colonial landscape.
The ARTPOINT Gallery is hosting an exhibition of works from Australian artists Sharon Ladd and Jodie Hilton. The show opens Friday, July 7 and runs until August 1.
Stride Gallery has announced Justin Waddell is the centres new director. A graduate of Ontario College of Art & Design, Waddell has been involved in various capacities with artist-run centres, galleries and festivals. He was most recently co-director of YYZ Artists Outlet in Toronto. |
