Canada Day is coming, and Broken City has invited us to celebrate our rich heritage by drinking beer and watching local bands cover Canadian rock classics. The second annual Solid Gold Beaver event takes place this July 1.
From noon on, there will be live covers of beloved Canadian hit songs from all eras performed by popular Calgary bands like Beija Flor, The Everymen, Gutterawl, The A-Team and The Boygirls. This years song list is covered in secrecy sauce - but it will most likely be as varied as last year, when The Dudes covered the music of Thrush Hermit, The Means did Men Without Hats, and Hot Little Rocket played some Sloan tunes.
CJSWs Kenna Burima (the Oprah Winfrey of Calgary) will be spinning her "hoser chic" record collection on the patio, there will be $2 Tubby Dogs, a $2 cover charge for anyone wearing what Broken City calls the "Canadian Tux" (all blue denim, head to toe) and all proceeds go to the Calgary Drop-In Centre.
Tourists will get an ear-full of Calgary music this Stampede, as The Palomino hosts its first annual Rock n Roll Rodeo. On July 15 starting at noon, (the new official start time for "partying" in Calgary), some of the citys finest bands will be performing sets of music to Palomino regulars and international travellers alike. I may not be able to hear it all from my "Stampede rock" that I crawl under every year, which is too bad some of the 20 confirmed acts include Scott MacLeod, The Ramblin Ambassadors, Life Like Cobra, and The Smokin 45s.
Calgarys very own "metal mates of the
high seas
of
metal" Verbal Deception's highly anticipated debut album Aurum Aetus Piraticus is scheduled for release on June 27. The album has 11 tracks, all recorded at Sundae Sound Studios here in Calgary. According to their website, Auraly Eat Pie (or whatever its called) is perfect for any of us who are willing to "drink from the cup of treachery." Hey
thats me!
They have also booked a tour through the U.S., surely to pillage and plunder our Yankee neighbours booty and most likely be submitted to a "booty search" at the border (if you know what I mean. Ill tell you later).
Dont miss what may very well be the only "pirate-metal" show taking place in the entire city on June 24 at The Underground. |
