Arts article on touring project misguided
Re: "On interventionist art," by Wes Lafortune, Visual Arts, June 8-14, 2006.

Wes Lafortune’s suggestion to "consider taking the discussion out to the people" ignores the fact that the majority of the School of Panamerican Unrest’s Calgary stop was conducted in the Olympic Plaza (as depicted in the photograph used to accompany the article). This public project included a workshop in the morning, a ceremony in the evening and a schoolhouse structure that was on display during the entire day in the Plaza.

The article’s narrow focus in discussing a single Halifax-based project presented by a single panelist, as a part of what was only a component of a day-long schedule of public events, fails to offer pertinent or intelligent critique of this international touring project. This misguided focus also exposes a lack of research into the actual aims of a project that, for those who attended more than the panel discussion, encouraged dialogue about topics far beyond "a showcase of why interventionist art sometimes misses its mark."

I would strongly encourage those looking for accurate information about the project and its events to visit the SPU website at www.panamericanismo.org.
