· Flaming Lips drummer goes up-market.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. While The Flaming Lips' prog meets lite rock has a lot more in common with mid-period Genesis than their fans seem willing to admit, their drummer's first solo album is the absolute opposite of Phil Collins.

Starting with an imaginative set of variations of Steve Reich's Clapping Music, reaching its apogee with the complex, 12 minute musique concrete-meets-avant-garde percussion of "Monkey Chant," and closing with the delicate "Fantasy on a Shona Theme," Kotche does his best to restore the honour of his ilk.

Some of the tracks ("Mobiles 1-3") don't quite work, or perhaps they're just too rock ’n’ roll drum solo for me. At any rate, a very impressive solo debut.
